Why School Gardens?

Why do we think school gardens are so important, and why are we so passionate about our Plant-B projects? Make yourself comfortable because on this topic there is always a lot we can talk about.

Every day we hear more about food insecurity, pesticide allergies, environmental changes, unsustainable agriculture practices, micro-plastics in foods, obesity rates, diabetes, water pollution, rising food costs......ok...now you can probably see where this is going.

At Plant-B we feel It is more important than ever for humans to reconnect with nature and learn through our school systems, the basics of growing a garden, how to care for ourselves, and our planet. Simple right? We think so. If we teach children ( from the ground up) a respect for our living soils, we gain a better understanding of how all living things are connected. How we treat our soil, affects microorganisms, plants, animals and humans....healthy soil = healthy humans. When we are able to demonstrate these connections happening at a ground level, and children are taught how to grow their own foods, it potentially opens up a whole new world of ecological understanding, sustainability and food security in their futures.

With several years experience building and facilitating both community gardens and school gardens we have concluded that the school garden model works well because...

-The land available is usually quite spacious, and will not be sold, undergo changes in zoning, or reallocated for new building projects.

-There is always a team of eager little volunteers, and teachers willing to ditch their desks for 20 minutes to help with garden activities.

-Vegetable gardens can be used as an extension of the school or as an 'outdoor classroom' where children get hands on experience, exploring ecosystems, water cycles, biology, math, climate, food services etc. The educational possibilities are endless and we can only guess how some creative teachers might incorporate a garden into their lesson plans.

-School vegetable gardens can enhance children's health by teaching them about nutrition, increasing their vegetable consumption, and promoting physical activity. These gardens also provide stress relief, encourage teamwork, and offer valuable life skills while connecting children to their food sources and encouraging a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle. Overall, school gardens offer a multifaceted approach to improving children's physical and mental well-being.

Another cool fact- It has been proven that bacteria in soils help children build stronger immune systems . Additionally the smell of mycobacterium vacii, a microorganism in soil, and compost, will trigger neurotransmitters that release serotonin ( a mood lifting hormone ). Pair these great benefits along with fresh air, a little exercise, and some fun 'real life' activities, and we have developed a learning environment that will literally MAKE KIDS HAPPY.

By building school gardens we are creating an outdoor learning space where physical activity, participation, enthusiasm and cooperation is not only encouraged, it's EASY.

  • It's time for Plant - B

Our Plant-B garden kit provides everything a school needs to start, and maintain a school garden. We have developed a cohesive garden package that can be delivered on site. The package contains materials to build 4 raised beds, topsoil, potting mix, compost, a long handled shovel, hand tools, 2 watering cans and seeds. With the help of several local experts and teaching staff we've developed a comprehensive guide to help your school garden thrive year after year. Additionally it is our objective to create a network for teachers and students to share their ideas, learning objectives, and experiences in their gardens, along the way.

  • Plans to Grow !

We plan to grow gardens, of course. Our goal is to build gardens across Canada, and influence local policy makers to include food production in school curricula. We joke about saving the world one garden at a time, but why not? It's good to dream BIG, right? Our plan is also to become more sustainable with each step of the process, and to diversify our product line along the way to offer more styles, more graphics, travel gear, masculine or gender neutral options and accessories. As we scale up we have more access to organic materials, bamboo, or recycled fabrics that are not available for purchase in smaller quantities. From our tags to our bags, we want control over all our processing impact, and to be the most sustainable version of ourselves that we can possibly be.

A Message From Our Founder

As an avid home gardener, a plant science graduate, community garden facilitator and school garden volunteer I was passionate about sharing the benefits of gardening with others. I envisioned building school gardens across the country and providing children greater access to these outdoor learning spaces. As an entrepreneur by trade I was also intrigued by the fashion industry and felt that I could do better, choosing to produce quality apparel that contradicts fast fashion trends. It was through this combined experience that my vision was brought into focus, and Plant-B Clothing Design was born.

"Saving the world one garden at a time."
